Gulf Breeze Zoo Turns Groundhog Day Into “Kenya Day” With a Giraffe Leading the Forecast
Groundhog Day took on a fresh twist at the Gulf Breeze Zoo this year. Instead of relying on a groundhog to determine whether winter would linger, guests watched one of the Zoo’s tallest residents take over the forecasting duties. Kenya, an endangered reticulated giraffe and a longtime favorite among visitors, stepped into the spotlight during the first-ever “Kenya Day” celebration.
The inaugural event, held on February 2, marked the Zoo’s playful declaration that Gulf Breeze is now the epi-center of national Groundhog Day festivities. Standing 15 feet tall, Kenya quickly won the crowd as she prepared to share two predictions: whether there would be six more weeks of winter or an early spring, and which team would win the upcoming Super Bowl.
“She’s not a one trick pony like Punxsutawney Phil,” said Katelyn Peters, the Zoo’s assistant guest services manager. “And let’s be honest, nor is he known for being cute. Kenya has beauty and grace in spades.”
The celebration began at 9:30 a.m., when Santa Rosa County District 5 Commissioner Colten Wright officially proclaimed February 2 as “Kenya Day.” The ceremony streamed live on the Gulf Breeze Zoo Facebook page, giving fans across the country a chance to watch Kenya deliver her Groundhog Day predictions.
Guests who attended in person enjoyed a festive morning as Kenya confidently made her calls, including her much-anticipated pick for the Super Bowl matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. The lively atmosphere and community excitement made it clear that the Zoo had started something special.
After such a successful debut, “Kenya Day” has become one of the Zoo’s newest annual traditions. As it grows, the celebration will continue to offer a fun, family-friendly twist on Groundhog Day while bringing greater attention to endangered reticulated giraffes and the Zoo’s ongoing commitment to conservation, education and community engagement.
