Gulf Breeze Zoo Welcomes a Trio of Giraffe Calves
Visitors to the Gulf Breeze Zoo have three new reasons to celebrate the holiday season. The zoo recently welcomed a trio of reticulated giraffe calves, all born within a week and already charming guests and staff alike.
After a 15-month gestation, Artemis delivered the first calf, a female named Arrow, on Oct. 22. Just days later, Sophia gave birth to a male calf, Salem, on Oct. 25. The third arrival came on Oct. 27 when Kelly welcomed a female calf named Kaliape.
Park Director Cassidy Mazzone said anticipation had been building for months.
“We have been excited for these births,” Mazzone said. “These calves are significant for the species and we are proud to play an active role in efforts to ensure future generations of the reticulated giraffe.”
All three calves are healthy and bonding with their mothers behind the scenes. They have begun to spend time on exhibit as they grow more confident. The rest of the herd can be viewed and fed at the giraffe feeding station every day, weather permitting, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Giraffes, the tallest land mammals, remain one of Africa’s most iconic species but continue to face threats including habitat loss, poaching, human encroachment and disease. Wild populations of reticulated giraffes are estimated at only 4,500 to 4,700.
The Gulf Breeze Zoo is part of Zoofari Parks, which also includes Alabama Safari Park, Texas Zoofari Park and Virginia Safari Park. Together, the parks support conservation through public education, breeding programs, habitat preservation and field-based assistance funded through the Zoofari Parks Conservation Grants program.
