Gulf Breeze Zoo Welcomes Kahlani, a World Giraffe Day Baby
The Gulf Breeze Zoo is celebrating a tall and very special arrival just in time for World Giraffe Day. On May 9, Kenya the reticulated giraffe gave birth to a healthy female calf named Kahlani. She entered the world already six feet tall and weighing 151 pounds, instantly capturing the hearts of the Zoo’s animal care team.
Just like most giraffe births, Kahlani’s debut was dramatic. Giraffe calves are usually born while the mother is standing, so newborns make a six-foot drop before their hooves ever touch the ground. Animal care staff monitored the entire delivery to make sure both mother and calf remained healthy and comfortable.
“Kahlani found a special place in our hearts almost instantaneously. Despite being the fourth calf born in eight months, she has a personality of her own,” said Park Director Cassidy Mazzone. “She enjoys her training sessions with the hoofstock team and is being introduced to the rest of the giraffe herd.”
Kahlani is the daughter of Kenya and Gideon, two well-known members of the Zoo’s reticulated giraffe tower. Guests may already recognize Kenya, who famously takes the spotlight each February during the Zoo’s annual Kenya Day celebration.
A Meaningful Birth for a Vulnerable Species
Reticulated giraffes are among Africa’s most iconic animals but remain vulnerable in the wild. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the species has declined nearly 40 percent during the past thirty years because of habitat loss and poaching. With only an estimated 4,500 to 4,700 individuals remaining, every birth is a step forward for giraffe conservation.
“Each calf represents hope for the future,” Mazzone said. “Every birth is not only joyful for our team but meaningful for the species.”

Guests can see the energetic new calf during daily visits from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting. Although she is still too young to enjoy romaine lettuce, visitors can feed other members of the giraffe tower or book an up-close giraffe encounter offered daily at 1 p.m.
