Gulf Breeze Zoo Marks 40 Years of Wild Adventures
The Gulf Breeze Zoo is gearing up for a milestone birthday, and everyone is invited to the party. On May 23, the Zoo will celebrate 40 years of unforgettable animal encounters, family fun and conservation-focused growth.
What began in 1984 as the Zoo of Northwest Florida has grown from a modest 19-acre park with about 60 animals into a thriving 50-acre destination home to more than 1,200 animals representing more than 125 species. Founders Pat Quinn, Bobby Switzer, Bill Pullum and Dr. Jim Potter could never have imagined just how wild the next four decades would become.
A Celebration 40 Years in the Making
Guests visiting on Thursday, May 23 can expect a full day of special events honoring the Zoo’s past, present and future. The first 400 visitors will receive a commemorative anniversary magnet and the fun continues from there. Keeper chats will be offered throughout the day, a scavenger hunt will challenge guests of all ages and the Zoo will also celebrate World Turtle Day.
The centerpiece of the celebration takes place at 1 p.m., when Zoo leaders will share remarks and serve cake to mark the official anniversary moment. With gates open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., visitors will have plenty of time to explore, learn and join the festivities.
A Look Back at Major Milestones
Through the years, the Gulf Breeze Zoo has evolved into a regional leader in animal care and conservation. A few standout moments include:
- 2009–2010: A new era begins. Zoofari Parks acquired the Gulf Breeze Zoo in December 2009 and reopened the revitalized park on February 18, 2010, ushering in a new chapter of investment, expansion and conservation work.
- 2018: A monumental birth. On January 20, 2018, the Zoo welcomed its first baby white rhino, Katana, the first rhino calf born in the Zoo’s 34-year history.
- 2019: A family of great apes arrives. A family of six orangutans joined the Zoo in February 2019 from a conservation center in Connecticut, quickly becoming guest favorites.
- 2021: A rare hippo milestone. The Gulf Breeze Zoo became only the second zoological facility in the United States to care for both Nile and pygmy hippos, joining the San Diego Zoo in this distinction.
A Commitment to Conservation
As part of Zoofari Parks, the Gulf Breeze Zoo supports global wildlife conservation through education, captive breeding programs, habitat preservation and financial support for field projects via the Zoofari Parks Conservation Grants program. That mission has guided the Zoo’s evolution for decades and remains a cornerstone of its future.
Four decades after opening its gates, the Gulf Breeze Zoo continues to grow, inspire and bring families together. With bigger habitats, a broader collection of species and ever-expanding conservation efforts, the Zoo’s 40th anniversary marks not just a celebration of the past, but a bold step into the next chapter of adventure.
