Kenya Takes Over Groundhog Day on the Gulf Coast

Groundhog Day Becomes Kenya Day at the Gulf Breeze Zoo

At the Gulf Breeze Zoo, Groundhog Day has taken on a much taller twist. Instead of watching for a groundhog’s shadow, guests gather to see whether Kenya, an endangered reticulated giraffe, will signal an early spring. After a wildly popular debut last year, Kenya Day returns as a new annual tradition that puts the spotlight on one of the Zoo’s most beloved residents.

Winter settled in sharply across the Gulf Coast last week, but Kenya is ready to offer her forecast for warmer days ahead. The second annual Kenya Day will take place Sunday, February 2 at 9:30 a.m. at the giraffe exhibit. Kenya will step into her role as the Gulf Coast’s official Groundhog Day ambassador and deliver two important predictions: whether winter will linger another six weeks and who will win the upcoming Super Bowl.

“Kenya made accurate weather and Super Bowl predictions last year and she is now the official Groundhog Day ambassador for the Gulf Coast,” said Cassidy Mazzone, Park Director at the Gulf Breeze Zoo. “And let’s be honest, she’s a lot more fun to see than Punxsutawney Phil.”

Fans near and far can take part in the festivities. The event will stream live on the Gulf Breeze Zoo Facebook page, giving viewers around the world a front-row seat as Kenya makes her choices. Guests who want to enjoy the fun in person can attend the ceremony with regular Zoo admission.

Super Bowl LIX will be held February 9, 2025, at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, where the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles will face off. Whether Kenya sides with the Chiefs or the Eagles remains to be seen, but if last year is any indication, she may be worth listening to.

By turning Groundhog Day into a celebration of wildlife, conservation and pure fun, the Gulf Breeze Zoo continues to build new traditions that bring the community together—one giraffe prediction at a time.
