The Gulf Breeze Zoo is excited to introduce our newest animal experience, giving guests the opportunity to meet one of Madagascar’s most recognizable residents, the ring-tailed lemur.
During this experience, you’ll meet our curious troop, offer them their favorite treats and learn about the fascinating lives of these remarkable primates. While the encounter is sure to create unforgettable memories, its purpose goes far beyond a close-up wildlife experience.

Modern zoos play an important role in conservation, education and inspiring people to care about wildlife. Animal encounters create meaningful connections between guests and the animals they meet, turning a memorable moment into an opportunity to learn.
When visitors experience an animal’s curiosity, intelligence and unique behaviors firsthand, they’re more likely to remember what they’ve learned and become invested in protecting wildlife and wild places. These personal connections often spark conversations long after a zoo visit ends.
Our new ring-tailed lemur encounter is designed to do exactly that. By meeting the troop up close, guests gain a greater appreciation for these incredible primates and the challenges they face in the wild.
“Our goal is to create experiences that inspire people to care about wildlife,” said Hunter Hullett, Gulf Breeze Zoo park director. “When guests have the opportunity to connect with an animal like a ring-tailed lemur, they’re more likely to remember its story and understand why protecting species and their habitats is so important. We hope every guest leaves with not only a great memory, but also a deeper appreciation for conservation.”
Meet the Ring-Tailed Lemur
With their striking black-and-white striped tails and expressive personalities, ring-tailed lemurs are among Madagascar’s most iconic animals. Unlike monkeys, lemurs are primates found naturally only on the island of Madagascar, making them an endemic species.
Their signature tails aren’t used for hanging from trees. Instead, they help with balance as the lemurs move through their habitat and serve as a way to communicate with one another. Ring-tailed lemurs also spend more time on the ground than many other lemur species, making them a little different from the tree-dwelling primates many people picture.
As you meet the troop, you’ll notice each lemur has its own personality. Ring-tailed lemurs are highly social animals that communicate through vocalizations, body language and scent marking. Another fun fact? Female ring-tailed lemurs lead the troop and have priority access to food and resources.
Unfortunately, life in the wild has become increasingly difficult.
Habitat loss, deforestation and other human pressures have caused lemur populations to decline dramatically. Today, ring-tailed lemurs are classified as endangered and many of Madagascar’s more than 100 lemur species are among the world’s most threatened mammals.
Supporting Conservation in Madagascar
Conservation doesn’t stop at the zoo gates. Through Zoofari Parks Conservation Grants, the Gulf Breeze Zoo proudly supports Association Mitsinjo, a community-based conservation organization working to protect Madagascar’s forests and wildlife.
Association Mitsinjo conducts research on several lemur species, helping scientists better understand both well-known and lesser-known lemurs. The organization also partnered with Madagascar Biodiversity Partnership and Madagascar National Parks to reintroduce the diademed sifaka to Analamazaotra Forest after the species disappeared from the area in the late 1970s.
Another major focus of Mitsinjo’s work is restoring Madagascar’s rainforests. Rather than protecting isolated patches of forest alone, the organization plants native trees to reconnect fragmented habitats. These forest corridors allow lemurs and other wildlife to move safely between forests, increasing genetic diversity and creating healthier ecosystems for future generations.
Supporting organizations like Association Mitsinjo allows the Gulf Breeze Zoo to help protect wildlife where it matters most, in the animals’ native habitats.
